I've been thinking of buying a banjo, but I would like some pre-help. First off al; how do i pick? I have decided to go with bluegrass style, and i have read i should use middle finger on string 1, index on number 2 and the thumb on 3, 4 and 5. Is this true? Are there any exceptions?
And second, could someone explain to me in an easy way what fretting is and how I do it?

Jonny Hulme kindly demos the brilliant value-for-money Tonewood DB-45 banjo .. this is the banjo model he recommends to all of his beginner/intermediate bluegrass banjo students .. "you won't find any resonator banjo that sounds and plays as well for the same money in my opinion"!!

My old banjo has reached its final days and has had to be replaced, so here is my first effort on the new one. Not having played banjo for nearly a year, I am somewhat rusty, not that I was any good anyway, so there are a few (ha ha) mistakes, but after more than 60 attempts, this will have to suffice. The tunes are three Manx dance tunes the names of which are: Car Ny Ferrishyn (The Fairies' Dance); Chyndaa Yn Bwoailley (The Courting Dance); Eunyssagh Vona (Vona's Delight).

The Georgia Grind is a new arrangement for Classic Banjo by Steve Harrison and myself, here in the UK. This is a great old ragtime tune rarely heard played on the banjo but I think it fits perfectly for the instrument. My wife arranged the piano accompaniment and plays in the video. these are the 6 voicings I use for playing extended consonant dominant sounds on the 5 string banjo. I offset them by a tritone to get a more ALT7 type of voicing.

I'm trying out making videoes of different 5-string banjo styles and techniques.I'm no banjo expert so bear with me. There are many regional in clawhammer banjo. This version is based on the playing of Lee Hammons of Pocahontas County in West Virginia), but I think the it's probably closer to the style of south western Virginia. The style is maily noticable in the heavy focus on rhythm. Disclaimer: Learning a regional styles is a lifelong pursuit, and this is just my feeble attempt. Listen to great players of the region to get a better feel of the style, and feel free to comment if I'm way of the style.
